Kids’ dental care: first visits, CHIP and coverage

Healthy habits start early. Here is when your child should first see a dentist and how their care can be covered.

First visit and check-ups

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first dental visit when the first tooth appears and no later than the first birthday. Regular check-ups after that let the dentist spot decay early and apply preventive treatments such as fluoride varnish and sealants.

How children’s dental care is covered

  • Medicaid and CHIP: must cover dental services for children. Find a dentist via InsureKidsNow.gov.
  • Marketplace plans: pediatric dental is an essential health benefit, sometimes provided through a separate dental plan.
  • Employer dental plans: usually cover children, often including some orthodontic coverage; see braces and aligners.

Fluoride in a changing landscape

Utah and Florida stopped community water fluoridation in 2025, and other places are debating it. If your water is not fluoridated, ask your dentist or pediatrician about other ways to protect your child’s teeth. See the water fluoridation debate.
