Medicare telehealth extended through 2027

Medicare’s pandemic-era telehealth flexibilities have lapsed and been renewed several times. A government funding law signed in February 2026 extended them through December 31, 2027.

What the extension means

  • You can generally receive Medicare telehealth services at home, wherever you live, not only in rural areas or at a clinic.
  • A wider range of practitioners can bill for telehealth.
  • Some services can be delivered audio-only when video is not possible.

Behavioral and mental health telehealth at home was already permanent under earlier law, though in-person visit requirements may apply.

Tips for telehealth visits

  • Ask whether your doctor offers video visits and how to join.
  • Check costs: normal Part B cost-sharing usually applies.
  • Medicare Advantage plans may offer additional telehealth benefits.
  • Use telehealth for follow-ups and prescription reviews; see a clinician in person when you need an exam.

Telehealth also plays a growing role in private and direct primary care.
