Dates to know
- November 1, 2026: open enrollment starts on HealthCare.gov.
- December 15, 2026: enroll by this date for coverage starting January 1, 2027.
- January 15, 2027: the HealthCare.gov window is expected to close; enrollments after December 15 generally start February 1.
States that run their own exchanges can set different dates, and some open earlier or close later. Rules on the length of the window have been subject to litigation, so confirm the current deadline on HealthCare.gov or your state exchange.
Why to compare plans this year
Insurers have filed for further premium increases for 2027, and the enhanced premium tax credits that lowered costs from 2021 to 2025 have expired. See what changed with ACA subsidies. Do not auto-renew without checking your new premium, deductible and network.
Tips for choosing a plan
- Update your expected 2027 income: subsidies are based on it.
- Compare total yearly cost (premiums plus likely out-of-pocket costs), not just the premium.
- Check your doctors, hospitals and prescriptions are covered.
- Bronze and catastrophic Marketplace plans can now be paired with an HSA; see HSA changes.
- Need adult dental? It is usually a separate plan; see our insurance guide.
